Beaches of Puerto Rico

When you visit Puerto Rico, you will want to experience the beaches which are among the best in the world. You can choose from many active beaches throughout the island that cater to both young people as well as families. There are also private beaches that are usually reserved by resorts or privately owned. Some of the best beaches on the island of Puerto Rico are as follows:

Cana Gorda

Cana Gorda is located in Guanica which is a town that is located on the Southwest part of the Island. Guanica is a coastal town whose inhabitants mostly worked in the sugar fields or were fisherman. Fishing and tourism dominate the town. The sugar mill, which once dominated the town, is no more, but you can see the remains.

Cana Gorda is the beach that is located in Guanica and offers many different activities, not excluding lying on the white sand and enjoying the crystal clear waters. There is also a nearby nature preserve that is very popular for hiking and watching birds.

There are many different little cays around Guanica with small islets. Most of these small islands are uninhabited and include the popular Gilligan’s Island which is named after the popular television show of the same name. Gilligan’s Island has been popular with people who like to snorkel for years as you can see some beautiful corals as well as tropical fish.

Rincon Bay

Rincon is located in the most westerly tip of the island and is considered to be the surfing capital of the Caribbean. The public beach is very popular with families as well as those who want to partake of the fabulous sea shells that are in the area. You can also enjoy snorkeling at one of the six beaches on Rincon Bay.

One of the more interesting aspects of Rincon Bay beaches is that they are close to the Mona Passage which is great for whale watching. The humpbacked whales migrate to this area every winter so you can usually spot them during the winter months in the mainland United States.

Crashboat

Crashboat is located on the Northwest coast of Puerto Rico and is one of the most romantic of the Puerto Rican beaches. This is not a beach for swimming as the water is too rough, but it is great for sunsets and romantic walks as the nature surrounding the beach is among the most breathtaking in Puerto Rico.

Surfers enjoy the rough waves at Crashboat which gets its name from an abandoned pier that fishing boats used to be tied to during storms. The rough waters would often damage the boats.

Despite the name and dubious reputation, Crashboat remains one of the most picturesque beaches in Puerto Rico.

Isla Verde

Isla Verde is a beach that is located close to San Juan, which is the capital city of Puerto Rico. The beaches are in front of luxury resorts and hotels and offer every accommodation you can imagine, including food and drink. If you are unsure about which beaches to go to during your trip to Puerto Rico and want to make sure that you have a good time with the family, visit one of the many beaches at Isle Verde in San Juan.

Shacks

One of the best beaches and one that is favored by those who like to windsurf is Shacks which is located on the Atlantic Coast between Arecibo and Rincon. Even though this is supposed to be the windsurfing capital of the Caribbean, it is usually a pretty quiet beach and offers chances to snorkel as well as scuba dive.

There are hundreds of beaches throughout Puerto Rico and each one seems to be more beautiful than the next. Make sure that you visit several during your trip to this tropical island.
